Ecuador harbors one of the most diverse Neotropical scorpion faunas, hereby updated to 47 species contained within eight genera and five families, which inhabits the “Costa” (n= 17), “Sierra” (n= 34), “Oriente” (n= 16) and “Insular” (n= 2) biogeographical regions, corresponding to the western coastal, Andean, Amazonian, and the Galápagos archipelago regions, respectively. The genusTityus Koch, in the family Buthidae, responsible for severe/fatal accidents elsewhere in northern South America and the Amazonia, is represented in Ecuador by 16 species, including T. asthenes, which has caused fatalities in Colombia and Panama, and now in the Ecuadorian provinces of Morona Santiago and Sucumbíos. Avaliação da DL50 e edema pulmonar induzido pelo veneno de Tityus serrulatus (Scorpiones; Buthidae) procedente da Bahia, Brasil Biota Neotropica

O escorpião Tityus serrulatus é conhecido como a espécie mais importante, do ponto de vista médico, pois é o que causa os acidentes mais graves registrados para o território brasileiro. Este trabalho trata da caracterização do veneno do escorpião T. serrulatus, através da obtenção da DL50 e determinação da capacidade em induzir edema pulmonar, em ratos. O veneno foi obtido através de estímulo elétrico. A toxicidade foi determinada através da avaliação da DL50, pelo método de Finney (1971). Os valores demonstraram a baixa toxicidade do veneno (96,16 mg/camundongo), que corresponde a 3 - 7 vezes menos tóxico que venenos de espécimes de outras regiões do Brasil. En Sudamérica los escorpiones que revisten importancia sanitaria pertenecen a la familia Buthidae y al género Tityus. En Argentina existen seis especies: T. trivittatus Kraepelin, T. confluens Borelli, T. bahiensis (Perty), T. argentinus Borelli, T. paragua­yensis Kraepelin y T. uruguayensis Borelli, de las cuales sólo las tres primeras demostraron poseer venenos tóxicos capaces de ocasionar accidentes fatales. El escorpionismo, en su aspecto clínico es un envenenamiento de causa accidental producido por la inoculación del veneno de un alacrán o escorpión, que en Argentina ocurre predominantemente en áreas urbanas, en el ámbito domiciliario o peridomiciliario. El escorpionismo es un envenenamiento de etiología accidental producido por la inoculación del veneno de un alacrán o escorpión, que ocurre predominantemente en áreas urbanas, en el ámbito domiciliario o peridomiciliario. En nuestro país son tres las especies de escorpiones de interés médico-sanitario: Tityus trivittatus, T. confluens y T. bahiensis. El cuadro clínico se caracteriza por presentar dolor agudo con escaso compromiso cutáneo y manifestaciones sistémicas que pueden, ocasionalmente, causar la muerte, principalmente en niños. El objetivo de esta publicación es, dar a conocer el registro de consultas en el Centro Nacional de Intoxicaciones en el período comprendido entre Enero de 2000 a Diciembre de 2010.

. Los escorpiones de importancia médica en el mundo pertenecen mayoritariamente a la familia Buthidae. En Argentina, los miembros de esta familia no son numerosos, siendo mucho mayor el número de especies de la familia Bothriuridae, cuyos miembros hasta el momento no revisten importancia médica. Dentro de los tres géneros de Buthidae que viven en el país, el género Tityus es el que posee especies cuya picadura e inoculación de veneno puede provocar accidentes severos. This work presents the experience of the Laboratory of Arthropods at Instituto Butantan, which maintains scorpions in captivity in order to obtain the venom used in the production of anti-arachnid serum. Between 1993 and 2000, the laboratory received 24.781 specimens of Tityus serrulatus in order to obtain poison for the production of anti-scorpion serum. In the first extraction, performed by electrical stimulation, the animals gave an average quantity of 0.4 mg venom per specimen. Animal acquisition and involved professional safety are considered. In this context, the present study aims to provide an epidemiological analysis of accidents involving scorpions in Brazil.Methods An analytical epidemiological study of the scorpion accidents reported in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) was conducted from 2000 to 2012 in Brazil.Results During this period, 482,616 accidents and 728 deaths were reported. Scorpionism in the Americas occurs mainly in Mexico, northern South America and southeast Brazil. This article reviews the local scorpion fauna, available health statistics, and the literature to assess scorpionism in Central America. Notwithstanding its high toxicity in Mexico, most scorpion sting cases in Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are produced by species in the genus Centruroides that are only mildly toxic to humans despite the existence of ion channel-active toxins in their venoms. Scorpions from the primeval subgenus Archaeotityus produce putative homologs of Tityus serrulatus toxins active on voltage-gated sodium channels J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.

It has been proposed that the subgenus Archaeotityus comprises the most ancient species group within the medically important scorpion genus Tityus. cDNA encoding sodium-channel active toxins from the type species of this subgenus, Tityus clathratus (central Venezuela), have been isolated and sequenced. Two cDNAs were retrieved that encoded 61 amino acid-long putative neurotoxins named Tcl1 and Tcl2. Sequence identity was highest (87%) when both were compared with β-toxin Ts1 from the Brazilian scorpion Tityus serrulatus and its homologs from T. bahiensis, T. stigmurus, and T. costatus. This work reports the second record of the scorpion Tityus bahiensis Perty from Venezuela. The specimen was found alive in a wardrobe at a hotel resort in Margarita Island, northeastern Venezuela. Morphological characterization allowed its assignment to the Tityus bahiensis population inhabiting the southernmost area of the species' geographic range, e.g. the state of São Paulo in Brazil, northern Argentina and Paraguay. This paper describes a new species of scorpion of the Tityus genus, Tityus caripitensis (Scorpionida: Buthidae). This species can be found in Caripito, Bolívar municipality of Monagas State, Venezuela. The number of species of Tityus genus in Venezuela has increased to 37 with the inclusion of Tityus caripitensis. A diagnosis of the most significant morphological characteristics of both males and females of this new species, which has been causing serious envenomings in the Bolívar and Punceres municipalities, has been carried out.

En las últimas décadas en Argentina se han incrementado de forma muy importante las notificaciones por picadura de escorpiones y de muertes debido a éstas. En el período 1993-1999 se comunicaron 3 muertes y en el período 2000-2006 se registraron 19, haciendo que el envenenamiento por estos arácnidos se haya transformado en uno de los emponzoñamientos de mayor impacto sanitario en Argentina. En esta breve revisión se describen algunos de los mecanismos tóxicos conocidos y propuestos para el envenenamiento por escorpiones, así como algunos de los componentes conocidos del veneno de Tityus trivittatus, el escorpión de mayor importancia médica de Argentina.

VENEZUELAN ARACHNIDES: TWO NEW SPECIES OF THE Tityus GENUS (SCORPIONIDA: BUTHIDAE) IN THE STATE OF LARA J. Venom. Anim. Toxins

Two new scorpion species of the Buthidae family, Tityus ivic-nancor and Tityus sanarensis, are described in this paper. Both species belong to the "androcottoides" group and live from 1300 to 1400 m. above sea level near the town of Sanare (69º42'17.8"W, 9º45'3.9"N) in the southern part of the state of Lara in Venezuela. The number of Tityus species already known in Venezuela increases to 28 with the inclusion of these two new species. This paper includes a descriptive diagnosis and also a differential diagnosis of the species of Tityus that are geographically related to T. ivic-nancor and T. sanarensis. Drawings of the significant morphological characteristics of male and female specimens and a morphometric table are also included.

Venezuelan arachnids: two new species of the Tityus genus (scorpionida: buthidae) and the chromatographic profile of venom as a possible taxonomical tool J. Venom. Anim. Toxins

Two new species of the Tityus genus are described. T. isabelceciliae n. sp lives on the northern central slope of the Cordillera de la Costa. It belongs to the discrepans group and is dangerous to man due to its high number, aggressive behavior, domiciliary habits, and high toxicity of its venom. T. isabelceciliae venom is similar to other Tityus in relation to the molecular weight range and the biological activity of its components. However, the proportions of each fraction in the venom pooled from many T. isabelceciliae differ from the proportions in other Tityus, indicating that these proportions may have a taxonomical value.
